Being what some people call an ‘ideas’ person, I’m often characterised as being flexible, adaptable, open to change, creative etc. Although these are all positive attributes, the down-side of this ‘flexible’ attitude of mine is quite often I find myself with too many ideas. Is that even possible? Well, I’m starting to believe that it is.
Sometimes there are so many grand ideas in my head, it’s impossible to even know where to start. Call me a slow learner, but after two years in business, the goals that I set for myself at the beginning have not been achieved. That’s not to say I haven’t experienced some wonderful things and shared success with some intelligent and talented people throughout this amazing journey I have been on as a business owner, but after thinking recently about what I’d like to achieve in 2010, when it really comes down to it, I hate to admit that I have lost my focus. The things I want to achieve this year are still the same ‘big picture’ things I wanted to achieve in 2007 when I started the business.
So what happened? Well, as they say, hindsight is 20/20 and isn’t that the truth! I can clearly see that although I had goals in place, I didn’t have a plan. Sure, before I started the business I wrote a business plan and read and researched till the wee hours, but in all honesty, I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants. And oh yeah, it’s been a lot of fun!!
But getting back to my light bulb moment. As I was browsing the web today hoping to be inspired for my next bright idea, I came across a great website that shared some business ideas for mums. In a nutshell, they were; 1. Become a virtual assistant. (Check). 2. Become a freelance writer. (Check). 3: Create an email newsletter service. (Check). The more I read, the more I realised that my next ‘bright idea’ was already well established and sitting right in front of me. My business is a golden opportunity just waiting to blossom!
So what’s the problem? Well like I said before, I’ve lost my focus and have been spending my time on the wrong activities. Like a mouse on a treadmill, I’ve been busy, busy, busy but not really going in a specific direction. In my mind, my goals are clear. It’s up to me now to give my business a bit of TLC and let it bloom.
Next step, get a plan down on paper and bring on 2010. It’s going to be a great year.
Till next time,
